Project Information
The Building is located at the Royal Brisbane Womens Hospital site in Herston. The project involved the complete strip out of the 1960’s building back to the structural shell. The Health Sciences building is located on a Heritage listed site and adjacent to existing buildings of Heritage significance. Issues of fire separation from the existing adjacent Heritage buildings were successfully dealt with. This relatively complex project included the complete refurbishment of a building in excess of 25m in effective height. The building was upgraded to comply with the current requirements of the Building Code of Australia including new sprinklers, stair pressurisation, zone smoke control, emergency warning and intercommunication, emergency lifts etc. However discretion was used by the Building Certifier to sensibly address various existing conditions.
An upgrade of the facade included new full height glazing with effective sun control to create modelling and allow light penetration into the narrow floor plate. Other external features include a new double story entry, a perforated mesh feature screen, and prefinished panel system with strategically located slot windows to address the functional limitation of light penetration into the world class Pathology Museum.
The project includes a high level enclosed walkway connection to an adjacent building.
